It’s only data…

until you add meaning and context, then you give birth to information! So where can you source really valuable data that can be used for competitive advantage?

Well it seems like only yesterday that I was commenting on how people keep worrying about Google and how much information Google as about individuals. I *rightly* pointed out that the real villans of the peice are of course the ISP’s.

It was interesting to read on Techcrunch today that YouTube have been busy positioning themselves as a possible new source of data…

Individually no one source of information is that valuable. The real power comes from joining data sources together (something the UK government would do well to learn about) and then extract new meaning from the composite source. So for instance: your bank details + health record + ISP internet site profile + loyalty card + videos you watch online = VERY VALUABLE..

So who will be the first to create what in the early 90’s we called a ‘data warehouse’ ? New… NAH nothing new under the sun :-)

After the initial launch and excitement many designers are not interested in providing an ongoing maintenance and management service. Thank goodness for companies like n3w media who do.
